How Immersive Gamebox came to be
Will Dean Exits Tough Mudder
Will had sold his stake in Tough Mudder a few months earlier. He was enjoying a break in Wales with friends who had teenage kids, but was starting to get itchy feet.
Finding Teen-Friendly Activities Beyond Screens
In the wet weather, they struggled to find things everyone could enjoy and would get the teenagers off their phones. There was nothing good at the cinema, the local escape room wasn’t cool enough, and they were back on their phones at restaurants.
VR Adventures: From Motion Sickness to Social Disconnect
So VR it was. Which led to motion sickness and ended with Will huddled over a toilet. He also found it fundamentally antisocial, because once they’d put the headset on, they were no longer together.
Harnessing Social Play and Shared Experiences
Ironically board games were one thing that worked with the group. Which got Will thinking about potential business opportunities. Was there an experience that tapped into the sense of social play + shared experience that you get from activities like board games? Could he use personal experience from Tough Mudder of designing challenges which bring people together?
Queue Immersive Gamebox...
And so Immersive Gamebox was born (although originally it was called Electric Playbox). An interactive immersive smart room, inspired by interactive fiction books of his youth. Where the focus was on the team of players against the game instead of player vs player. He realised this would also avoid the hyper violence often associated with video games.
Crafting Imaginative Adventures
Along with David - Head of Strategy at Tough Mudder, they’d build experiences which prompts the users’ imagination and takes your brain (and those of your teammates) on collective adventure. 48 hours later, they had rented space in a warehouse in South London and construction had begun on GB v1.0…
